by Kyler Riley Ching Grade 5
Since we started learning on-line, I have had to study and research on my own, with the guidance of my teachers and parents. I had to browse through a lot of reading materials on the internet and read my books related to the topic to find enough information on what I need. It made me learn to work independently since before we used to do things in groups and share ideas on a paper pasted to a wall. It is a challenge to change from the old type of schooling to this online schooling but I feel that my classmates, teachers, and I have adapted to this type of learning now.
The Challenge
The new mode of learning is challenging because sometimes you encounter technical difficulties either with the internet connection or the gadgets that we use to connect. The learning curve of using new unfamiliar applications is also a challenge that we needed to overcome. But this new mode of learning is effective because now we can learn at our own pace and we have ample time to finish our tasks. We just need to maximize our time management. It is also effective because at school, we have lots of distractions and the class is noisy when everyone starts talking. In our Zoom classes, we have breakout rooms that helps us to concentrate and help us make discussions between our group mates easily and when we discuss our ideas, it is not being broadcasted to other team.
Learner Profile
The learner profile that I have developed and honed the most these past few months is being a Thinker. I have developed this further by doing all of my worksheets on my own. Watching documentaries and reading books helped hone my mind to be more creative. Along with doing mind games every day keeps my mind thinking. Being an IB learner profile Thinker, I can apply thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems and make reasoned, ethical decisions. Having to solve math games on a daily basis makes my mind and my thinking skills sharp.
